Pittsford Area Schools

Annual Report 2007-08

Annually, school districts throughout our state are required to present a report which highlights improvement efforts made in each building in the district.  I am proud of the accomplishments of the students and staff at Pittsford Area Schools.

Both the elementary and the middle/high school buildings set goals and continue to make strides in their quest to address these goals.  Involved parents and a dedicated staff and school board are the cornerstones to the success of our school district.

Good things are happening at Pittsford Schools as we strive to educate all students, inspiring them to become responsible and successful citizens.

Sincerely,

Andrew Shaw

Superintendent

Mission:  Pittsford Area Schools will provide continual opportunities for maximum student achievement.

Vision:  Pittsford Area Schools will prepare students to be productive members of society.

Belief Statements:

CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT PROCESS

The district continuous process is a data driven model that operates on the premise that those closest to the problems can best solve problems and improve the quality of learning.  Change is ongoing and, therefore, calls for a process that is continuous.  From analyzing student performance data and cause and effect data, planning can be developed, implemented, assessed, and evaluated.  After evaluating what is working, planners decide what to continue and what to change.

CORE CURRICULUM

The Pittsford Area Schools’ core curriculum includes the K-12 academic content areas of math, science, English/language arts and social studies.  In addition, other content areas such as art, physical education, health, foreign language, and technology are included in the district curriculum.

A district strategy was established to align the district curriculum with the Michigan Curriculum Framework.  With assistance from the Intermediate School District, the district has completed its K-12 curriculum alignment and will be implementing its quarterly assessments of the curriculum.  During the 2007-08 school year Pittsford Area Schools implemented the K-8 Grade Level Content Expectations. This assessment data will be used, and our curriculum will be assessed throughout the school year for future continuous improvement.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The district is in the process of developing a two to three year professional development plan.  During the 2007-08 school year, the district provided thirty hours (6 days) of professional development.  The areas the staff focused on were:

Building level and district level professional development will be outlined in future schedules.

PARENT PARTICIPATION

Pittsford Area Schools emphasizes the importance of parent participation and provides many opportunities for parent involvement.  Among these opportunities are parent-teacher conferences that provide a criterion from which to measure a level of participation.  The following table illustrates the percentage of students whose parents or guardians participate in annual building conferences:

                                                       2003-04        2004-05        2005-06      2006-07      2007-08

        Elementary School                 86%              98%              91%            95%               94%

        High School                           70%               54%             65%              63%            54%

Other parent involvement includes an active Athletic Booster Club, monthly Parent Club meetings, and parent volunteers in classrooms.

ACHIEVEMENT DATA

The following data represent a snapshot of student performance based in the Michigan Education Assessment Program (MEAP).  Although the MEAP is only one means of academically assessing student achievement, it does provide an indicator of areas of strength and needs in the district curriculum and instructional programs.  As part of continuous improvement, high need areas will be identified and action plans developed for those needs.

About MME Scores

The Michigan Merit Examination (MME) is the state assessment administered to all students enrolled in Grade 11 in March of each year. The MME consists of three major components: the ACT college entrance examination, the WorkKeys job skills assessments in reading and mathematics, and Michigan assessments in mathematics, science, social studies, and persuasive writing. The combined MME assessment measures student learning in the Michigan high school standards, benchmarks, and core content expectations.

MME high school assessments are offered in the spring of each school year. Students will have one opportunity to retest if needed to qualify for the Michigan Promise Scholarship.  High school MME scores are reported as raw numbers of students, not percentages, and are reported at four performance levels:

 Level 1: Advanced

 Level 2: Proficient

 Level 3: Partially Proficient

 Level 4: Not Proficient

A performance level is a range of scale scores that corresponds to student achievement levels. The MME student achievement levels are (1) Advanced, (2) Proficient, (3) Partially Proficient, and (4) Not Proficient. The divisions between the levels are called cut scores.  The cut scores are recommended by a panel comprised of educators and other stakeholders throughout the state. This panel uses detailed descriptions of what students in each of the performance levels should know and be able to do. Based upon these detailed descriptions and actual assessment items, the panel recommends the score that best separates each performance level from the next to the Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction. The Michigan State Board of Education approves the final cut scores and performance level ranges. The performance levels can be reasonably compared across subjects to indicate whether students are meeting Michigan performance expectations in each subject.

ANALYSIS OF STATE ASSESSMENT

As part of the continuous improvement process the academic core teachers conduct an annual analysis of the state assessment.  This analysis provides a means for comparing state data with classroom assessment data.  From the analysis staff are able to focus their continuous improvement and curriculum development on high needs areas.  The analysis will further provide direction for K-12 alignment in the district curriculum.  All of the information can be found at the following website: https://oeaa.state.mi.us/oeaa/

SPECIALIZED SCHOOLS

In addition to our regular K-12 program, there are specialized schools that serve Pittsford students.  First is Vocational education, where 42 students were involved in educational programs at the Hillsdale Home Building Site, Manufacturing Technology Center, Hillsdale Beauty College and Key Opportunities.  There are also special education programs offered by the Hillsdale County Intermediate School District and designed to assist students with severe handicaps.  High school students can receive college credit through dual enrollment after passing the MEAP test.
