Regular meeting of the Pittsford Area Schools Board of Education was held with Robert Clarke, Pete Wines, Denese Belson, David Billington, Brian Hoard, Mike Fowler, and Cindy Fenton being present.  

 

Mr. Shaw, Superintendent and Elementary Principal and Mr. T.G. Cook, Interim High School Principal was present from the administrative staff.

 

President Robert Clarke called the meeting to order at 7:05 p.m.

 

Mr. Clarke asked the Board of Education and audience to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

A motion was made by Mike Fowler and seconded by Brian Hoard to waive the reading of the minutes and approve the March 17, 2008, regular meeting minutes.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

Mr. Shaw and Mr. Cook spoke to the Board about the ideas and concepts for the middle school program scheduled for 2008/09. 

 

Marney Kast, Chief Deputy County Clerk, introduced herself as a candidate for office.  She asked everyone to remember to vote on August 5, 2008.

 

Bonnie Shaffer addressed the Board about the possibility of an Archery class for students. 

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Cindy Fenton to pay the bills.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

Mr. Shaw reported that the cafeteria, has once again, passed a recent health inspection with no violations.  He thanked the cafeteria staff for a job well done.

 

March was Reading Month and the theme was Beach & Castles.  It was the most successful reading month the elementary students have had to date.

 

Mr. Shaw reminded everyone that May 6th is the district’s annual school election, which will be held in the small gymnasium.  The poll will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.  There are two board seats open and a sinking fund proposal.

 

As in the past, the district will utilize the Department of Corrections for summer cleaning projects.

 

Mr. Shaw updated the Board on the progress of the collaboration of services with other area districts.

 

The National Honor Society took a trip to Washington, D.C. in March   Mr. Shaw thanked Mrs. Town and everyone who worked with the students in making the trip a success.

 

Mr. Shaw informed the Board that there would be a countywide special education election occurring next year.  He reported how this would impact our district and the cost that this district could incur if the millage were defeated.

 

Robert Clarke, Denese Belson, Pete Wines, and Mr. Shaw have attended township meetings to share information about the sinking fund proposal.

 

A committee has been established to review the applications for the secondary principal position.  A candidate will be brought to the Board in May.

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Dave Billington that the Board donate its May salary towards a luncheon for the staff at the end of the school year.  The motion carried (unanimously).

 

Brian Hoard asked what was going to be done with the donated scoreboards the district received.  Mr. Cook and Mr. Shaw are going to have them tested and if they are in working order, they will be put up.

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Pete Wines to accept the resignation of Dave Stoll, bus driver, at the end of the 2007/08 school year.  The motion carried (unanimously).

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Dave Billington to accept the PEA contract as presented.  The motion carried (unanimously).

 

The Kawanis Club donated two bicycles for the students who reached their goal during reading month.  The winners were Adrianna Brackman and Gracie Beach.  Kindergarten round up was held on April 10th and 11th.  We had 35 students register.

 

Mr. Cook reported the following events were coming up:  Prom – April 26, Blood drive in small gym – May 5,  Spring Band Concert – May 8,  Academic Honors Banquet – May 14,  Graduation – May 18,  Cedar Point Trip – May 23.  The K-9 Unit did a sweep of the high school.  Students will have their 2008-09 schedules before the end of school on June 6th.  Eric Becher from Albion College came and worked with the junior high and high school bands. 

 

Mr. Shaw and the Board thanked Rachel English and Becky Town, student representatives who served on the Board, for their hard work and dedication to the district.

 

A motion was made by Brian Hoard and seconded by Cindy Fenton to adjourn the meeting at 8:05 p.m.  The motion carried (unanimously).
