Regular meeting of the Pittsford Area Schools Board of Education was held with Robert Clarke, Pete Wines, Denese Belson, David Billington, and Brian Hoard being present.   Mike Fowler and Cindy Fenton were absent.

 

Mr. Shaw, Superintendent and Elementary Principal and Mr. T.G. Cook, Interim High School Principal was present from the administrative staff.

 

President Robert Clarke called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m.

 

Mr. Clarke asked the Board of Education and audience to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Pete Wines to waive the reading of the minutes and approve the January 21, 2008, regular meeting minutes.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

No visitors addressed the Board.

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Brian Hoard to pay the bills.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

Mr. Shaw told the Board that Representative Caswell has presented the district with a certificate for receiving the Bronze Medal.  It will be posted by the gymnasium.

 

The Senior Class had their annual trip to the Kalahari Water Park.  Mr. Shaw informed the Board that he received positive comments on how well behaved and responsible our students were.

 

The annual school election will be held on Tuesday, May 6th.  Voters will be filling two Board of Education positions as well as voting on a sinking fund for the district.

 

Recently there have been two food recalls.  The district did not have any of the hamburger that was recalled, but did have five cans of green beans that had been recalled.  Those cans were disposed of immediately.

 

The February student count was 668.  The elementary reported 318 with the high school reporting 350.  This is down 16 students from last fall. 

 

Mr. Shaw presented the Board with a School of Choice spreadsheet showing where students are going and coming from. 

 

The Board was given the senior class-ranking list for 2007/2008.  Rachel English is Valedictorian and Becky Town is Salutatorian.

A thank you letter from the Community Action Agency was presented for our help with food service until they could open their new facility.

 

Mr. Shaw informed the Board that Pittsford had met the requirements for Highly Qualified status under the No Child Left Behind Act.

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Pete Wines to hire Amy Chisholm as the lunchroom supervisor for the second semester of 2007/2008.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Pete Wines to approve the 2006/07 Annual Report as presented.  The motion carried (unanimous). 

 

Mr. Shaw reported that there would be no school on Thursday, February 28th for teacher professional development in the morning and parent/teacher conferences in the afternoon.  The St. Jude Math-A-Thon raised just over $1,000.  March is reading month and there are many activities planned.  One family reading activity is scheduled for March 4th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.  MEAP scores are in and Mr. Shaw said the students did pretty well.

 

Mr. Cook reported that progress reports were to go home on Tuesday, February 26th.  Winter sports are winding down and spring sports are to begin on March 10.  Mr. Cook and Mrs. Sanderson have begun looking at next year’s schedules.  Pre-registration will begin shortly to see what changes need to be made.  The juniors will take the ACT and Merit tests on March 11, 12 and 13.

 

A motion was made by Dave Billington and seconded by Brian Hoard to go into executive session at 4:47 p.m. to discuss the superintendent’s evaluation and a personnel issue.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Brian Hoard to come out of executive session at 5:55 p.m.  The motion carried (unanimous).
