Regular meeting of the Pittsford Area Schools Board of Education was held with Robert Clarke, Pete Wines, Denese Belson, Mike Fowler, and Craig Armstrong being present. Dave Billington and Cindy Fenton were absent.
Mr. Shaw, Superintendent and Elementary Principal and Mr. T.G. Cook, High School Principal was present from the administrative staff.
President Robert Clarke called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.
Mr. Clarke asked the Board of Education and audience to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.
A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Craig Armstrong to waive the reading of the minutes and approve the March 16, 2009, regular meeting minutes. The motion carried (unanimous).
Mr. Shaw and Mr. Cook gave the Board of Education an update on the fall MEAP scores that the district had recently received.
A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Craig Armstrong to pay the bills. The motion carried (unanimous).
A recent health inspection in the cafeteria showed no critical violations. Mr. Shaw recognized the staff for a job well done.
The Parents Club has raised over $900 through the Box Top for Education Program this school year.
Marlene Weaver has resigned from driving bus effective June 1, 2009. Mrs. Weaver has driven school bus for the district for 22 years.
There is less than a month until the countywide special education election. The election will be held May 5, 2009.
Mr. Shaw presented the Board with the monthly energy use charts. These charts will become an informational piece of the administrative reports beginning in May.
Mr. Shaw thanked everyone that helped with the remodeling of the superintendent’s office over spring break. The electrical cost was $829.66.
The district will remain as a “Class C” school again next year.
The last day of school will be June 1st, with the Annual Retirees Luncheon being held on June 2nd at 11:00 a.m.
There were 23 children that registered for Kindergarten Roundup. The district anticipates 35 kindergarteners in the fall.
A walk-through was done with Mende, Burke & Associates for the mechanical work that is expected to take place over the summer months. There will be new piping with 3-way values and thermostats placed in the elementary side of the building. Unit ventilators will be gone through, cleaned, and calibrated in the high school portion of the building.
Graduation will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2009, at 1:30 p.m. in the large gymnasium. Rob Clarke and Pete Wines will present diplomas to the Class of 2009.
The district is borrowing a cooler for cafeteria use until grants become available. The district plans to write a grant to replace the cooler.
South Central Michigan Works has received a grant to put 16 to 24 year old youths to work for the summer. There will be a meeting held with Mr. Cook and students to instruct them on how to apply for these positions. It is hoped that some of our students will be able to work for the school this summer.
A thank you note was received from the Harold Ferry family to the Board of Education.
At this point in time, there will be no mechanical work performed until some firm figures come in.
A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Craig Armstrong to approve the superintendent’s goals as presented. The motion carried (unanimous).
A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Denese Belson to approve the hiring of Michael Norton as assistant track coach for the 2008/09 school year. The motion carried (unanimous).
A motion was made by Mike Fowler and seconded by Pete Wines to grant tenure to English teacher, Aaron Bulgrien. The motion carried (unanimous).
A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Mike Fowler to extend Mr. Cook’s contract through the 2010/2011 school year. Any financial increase will come at a later date. The motion carried (unanimous).
Craig Armstrong expressed concern about the amount of dogs that are being brought to sporting events at the school. He asked Mr. Shaw to look into policy or procedures regarding this.
Mr. Shaw reported that there were several Science Olympiad awards presented last week at the honor roll assembly. Students went roller-skating on April 16th to celebrate reading month. All students had a fun time. There will be a 2-hour early dismissal on Wednesday, April 29th for professional development.
Mr. Cook reported that 153 students were on the honor roll for last marking period. Spring sports have begun. Prom is Saturday, April 25th at Savarino’s Banquet Facility. The spring blood drive is Monday, May 4th. The Academic Honors Banquet will be held on May 13th. Karlye Towne-Horton, past Pittsford graduate, will be the speaker at graduation.
A motion was made by Mike Fowler and seconded by Pete Wines to go into executive session at 8:15 p.m. to discuss personnel issues. The motion carried (unanimous).
