Regular meeting of the Pittsford Area Schools Board of Education was held with Robert Clarke, Pete Wines, Denese Belson, David Billington, Craig Armstrong, Mike Fowler, and Cindy Fenton being present.  

 

Mr. Shaw, Superintendent and Elementary Principal and Mr. T.G. Cook, High School Principal were present from the administrative staff.

 

President Robert Clarke called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. and asked the audience to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance.

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Cindy Fenton to waive the reading of the minutes and approve the February 23, 2009, regular meeting minutes.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Dave Billington to pay the bills.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

MME and ACT testing has taken place in the high school.  There was a good turn out of students in attendance.

 

Mr. Shaw congratulated the district’s athletes for a very strong winter sports season.

 

Tracy O’Haver has resigned as the district’s transportation/maintenance supervisor effective April 9, 2009.

 

Mr. Shaw presented the Board of Education with the countywide special education ballot language for the election that will take place on May 5, 2009.

 

During the month of February our energy use continues to remain down from last year at this time.

 

Athletic conference discussions have begun with other local superintendents.

 

The district has received a $1,000 donation for the athletic department from an anonymous donor.  Mr. Shaw expressed his gratitude for this donation.  He also mentioned that this is in addition to $2,000 that has also been donated this year from the same family.

 

Board packets will now be delivered to the Board of Education the Tuesday before each board meeting rather than the Friday before.  There was some discussion about going paperless.  Mr. Shaw will look into this possibility.

 

The mechanical work project was tabled until April’s board meeting.

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Dave Billington to approve the changes to the superintendent’s office at a cost not to exceed $1,300.  Motion carried 5–2.

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Cindy Fenton to approve Mr. Cook as the district’s building and grounds supervisor at a salary of $8,000 for one year.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Dave Billington and seconded by Pete Wines to approve Mrs. Heather Monahan for a second year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Dave Billington to approve Ms. Jessica Burkhart for a second year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Craig Armstrong and seconded by Denese Belson to approve Mr. Zachary Lee for a second year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Dave Billington and seconded by Pete Wines to approve Mrs. Jackie Barrett-Millies for a second year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Cindy Fenton to approve Mrs. Kristi Saunders for a fourth year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Dave Billington and seconded by Pete Wines to approve Mrs. Jodi Mallar for a fourth year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Denese Belson and seconded by Pete Wines to approve Mrs. Stephanie Clement for a fourth year of probationary teaching.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Pete Wines and seconded by Dave Billington to approve Mr. Travis Cushman for tenure.  The motion carried 6–1.

A motion was made by Dave Billington and seconded by Cindy Fenton to approve the band trip to Mackinac Island on May 3rd.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

Mr. Shaw reported that the elementary students were hard at work on March is Reading Month.  There will be a roller skating party held in April for the students.

 

Mr. Cook reported that the National Honor Society students would be going to New York March 19th – 23rd.  The spring band concert will be held on March 17th.  Ben Wines and Chase Weber placed 4th at State in wrestling and the boys’ basketball team finished 20-0.  The district hosted two Jr. Pro tournaments and Quiz Bowl Competitions.  The Science Olympiad team did well at regionals with Katie Fether and Chase Stratton placing as regional champions in environmental chemistry.

 

A motion was made by Mike Fowler and seconded by Dave Billington to go into executive session at 7:30 p.m. for personnel matters.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Mike Fowler and seconded by Cindy Fenton to come out of executive session at 8:00 p.m.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Mike Fowler and seconded by Dave Billington to approve the superintendent’s evaluation as presented.  The motion carried (unanimous).

 

A motion was made by Robert Clarke and seconded by Cindy Fenton to extend the superintendent’s contract through the 2011 school year.  The motion carried (unanimous).
